Remember the Weather When Planning Macedonia Travel

A visitor to Macedonia certainly has a lot to see and do, whether it is exploring historical ruins, visiting churches, enjoying adventure sports or just relaxing in a spa. However, there are a few things to keep in mind before planning a trip to Macedonia, the most important being the weather.

Macedonia has famously extreme climates. In summer, the temperatures can go as high as 40oC. On the other hand, in winter, they can come down drastically – as low as -30 oC. Also, not all regions of Macedonia enjoy the same climate. It is therefore very important to understand what regions you will be visiting and what the climate will be at that time of the year.

Macedonia is divided into three regions based on the climates there.

A climate similar to the Mediterranean one can be seen clearly in the ravines of Strumica-Radovis or Gevgelija-Valandovo and is characterized by long summers but relatively mild winters. One cannot very clearly notice the onset or going away of spring or fall. Rainfall here is very limited leading to the dryness of the region.

Next come the mountainous regions in the country. Typically, the winter will be long while summers will be short. They also tend to be cooler than usual. As one goes higher up the mountains, it starts getting colder. It can rain and snow fairly heavy up in the mountains.

However, a very large part of the country has a mildly continental climate. This means not very hot summers and relatively cold winters. There can be reasonable rain followed by snowfall or hailstorms.

All this means is that a visitor planning a visit to Macedonia must plan his or her trip very carefully. Usually, the best months to travel to Macedonia are supposed to be between May and September, assumedly because the summer is just ending around May and winter about to start in September. Regardless of the general weather information, you also need to get more information about the climate in the particular regions you want to go to.

If you are just going to be spending your trip in Macedonia, bathing at a hot water spring or if all you want is to stay at a nice ski lodge and ski all day, then climate changes need not bother you. However, if you are planning on doing any exploring, ensure that you are visiting the place at a time when you can safely go around and not be afraid of the weather playing spoilsport.

Make a list of places that you would like to go to when you are in Macedonia. Now consult your reference book to see what the climate in those places will be like when you are visiting. If one place seems unreachable at the time you are visiting, you can plan a visit to some other place.

By taking into account the weather at the places you are to visit, you will be ensuring that the weather does not disrupt your plans to any great extent.
