This interferes in the process of hearing. Women in their middle ages are at great risk for this condition. This type of hearing loss usually occurs in the age between 15 years to 40 years. It starts especially after 20 years of age. Pregnant women are affected due to hormonal changes. Above 60% of the cases have a genetic base.

* Tympanoplasty is a surgery to stop hearing loss wherein the eardrum is reformed. This surgery is performed under local anesthesia or general anesthesia. Using intravenous sedation the surgery can very easily performed under local anesthesia. A microscope is used so that an enlarged view of the ear of the patient becomes available to the surgeon. In some cases where the hole is beyond the view of the surgeon an incision behind the ear becomes a necessity. Once the ear hole is exposed the hearing bones are inspected. Then the defect drum is treated.  The infected area is identified and cut. There is a possibility of the presence of a scar tissue or bands around the hearing bones. This is corrected by using either laser or micro hooks. The graft is inserted under the eardrum to provide a closure. In tympanoplasty, a total hearing loss is extremely rare.  It requires a night’s stay at the hospital. It has no side effects. However, a small amount of bleeding or infection occurs sometimes. There might also be dizziness. Frequent infection during summer after swimming is a symptom of tympanoplasty. After three or four months of surgery, water is no longer harmful for the sufferer and the patient is allowed to swim.

Tinnitus, which is unpredictable, or an echo like feeling often occurs after the surgery. It may get temporarily worse after the surgery but it never happens that it becomes permanent. A nerve goes from the ear bud to the tongue. If this is stretched or cut during the surgery the food tastes salty for about six months.
