5 Tips To Organize Your Garage

More often than not, the problem with organizing a garage has been sorting out and arranging all the clutter that has built up in it over the years. Of course, there may be quite a few things that you can get rid of in your next garage sale and there may be a few that you can just throw out. The majority of them have to be sorted out and then organized neatly so that when you do need them, you can access them easily.

Let us look at the five key steps in organizing any garage.

  1. The first thing you need to do is to go through all that you have stored in your garage very carefully. Make tough decisions if you need to but get rid of whatever you think you will not be making use of. Once you have gone through everything with a fine-toothcomb, you will be left with items that you will be using regularly.
  2. The next step is how to arrange the space so that everything has a place of its own. A garage typically will have more wall space available than floor space and a few built-in shelves are great to hold gardening equipment or tools of any kind. One can also make efficient use of the ceiling – just put in a few hooks and storage shelf and you have a great space to keep things that you do not need very often. Like Christmas lights or decorations, camping gear, ladders, luggage, even your bicycles. You can move them off the garage floor making it more convenient for you to move around in the garage.
  3. If you have some very specific hobbies or interest, building a specific workshop or hobby/sports area may be advisable. Whether you are a hockey, golf or tennis fan, you can have one area of the garage especially designed to hold all your sporting equipment. Similarly if you like to work on small home improvement projects, an area where a workbench can be kept is great, as that will help you keep control over your various tools and small items like the many nuts, bolts or screws required for the job.
  4. In keeping with the growing awareness of the environment, many families now keep recycling bins in their homes and the most convenient place to keep them is of course the garage. From here the trash can easily be taken out to the curb. However, these bins stay on the floor all the time. To save space in the garage, try getting stackable recycling bins – for glass, aluminum and plastic. If you just add a handcart to this, all you need to do is wheel out the entire unit to the street.
  5. Part of organizing the garage is to make sure that maintenance of the garage can take place easily. A good garage floor coating ensures that oil spills can easily be cleaned up. Similarly a few well-placed lights will not only make the place look brighter but will also help you locate your items more easily.
