Many people take a lot of steps in order to attract hummingbirds. They use different types of vegetation and attractive colors to attract these birds. Feeders are also used.
However, at time use of a simple feeder is not enough to attract these humming birds. Under such circumstances, attracting the birds by building a habitat might help.
Humming bird habitat:
Since humming bird are the tiniest bird on earth, building their habitat would not require too much space.
A simple small basket or a tin box with attractive plants and flowers hanging around can be sufficient to attract these birds. All you need to have is a little creativity and patience to build such a habitat.
Planting of flowers involves art. You need to plants flowers of same color in a bunch and together. Don’t scatter these flowers around. This is to not let go off humming birds away from your garden.
Use of perennials is also a wise decision. They grow tall and tall every year. This characteristic of theirs attract humming birds constantly. Humming birds are also known for identifying their source of food and coming back and back to their food source.
Some of the common and most famous perennials are Red Bee Balm, Coral bells, Bleeding Heart, Foxglove, Cardinal Flower, and Red Columbine.
Annuals are other type that grow quite quickly and hence are apt for the newly set up garden. They come for cheap and hence are quite affordable. They can be put up in the gardens in large numbers. Salvia and red petunias can be planted as well.
Planning can be done to save money. Growing plants from seeds is a better option. This can give you variety as well. You can grow the plants of your choice. Planting the seeds indoor and then putting them and growing them outdoors can give you better plants and save a lot of your money. And if you start them early indoors, they will bloom sooner when planted outside.
Maintenance:
• Use of insecticides should be minimal.
• Nectar level in your plants and flowers should be maintained
• Water source should be added. This will attract other tiny birds and insects which in turn would form the diet of humming birds
• Putting up feeders is important
• Water tubs or pots can give these birds option of a shallow birdbath or mister which they love a lot
After creating a beautiful habitat, you need to add some beautifying feeders as well. This will give a complete look to your garden. After that all you need to do is add a place for viewing humming birds. A shady spot with cooling effect should be chosen.
