When both the partners are fertile, then artificial insemination can be used if there is an anatomic defect in any of the partners that prevents the sperm from being deposited near the cervix. These defects can be abnormal positioning of the cervix in the women and also abnormal positioning of the utheral opening in the men. This defect is known as hyposadias.

It is interesting to note, that in comparison to the six percent birth defects that occur in the general case, in case of artificial insemination the rate of defect is only one percent. 

For couples who cannot have a child, artificial insemination is the best way to have it. It is all the more important today with fewer children being put up for adoption. Although it is a highly effective method, but there are a lot of religious and psychological issues that are related with artificial insemination. Some parents cannot cope with the fact that they are not the biological father of their child. Although there are also cases in which the father accepts the child, as he has his wife’s genes and he has raised the child as his own. 

Sometimes couples who choose artificial insemination are not supported; in fact they are looked down upon. Many people are of the belief that artificial insemination is equal to adultery. In many cases the couples who go on for artificial insemination keep this a secret from their families and also their closes friends. There are a lot of legal questions that are still unanswered. Some courts in the United States, England and Canada have declared that they are illegitimate, while other courts have different opinion.
