It is usual for a baby to experience ear infection about two to three times a year before he turns two years old as an ear infection is a very common infant illness. If your baby is showing signs of crankiness or crying more than usual, it does not mean that he has an ear infection, but it may be the first sign that he is getting sick. If your baby is six months old and has a fever higher than 101 degrees or is over 6 months old and has a fever more than 102 degrees, then you should contact your pediatrician for advice. Since fever is the way out body fights a virus or an infection, a high fever is a definite sign that there is some sort of sickness in the baby’s body. There are a lot of ways to treat fever in babies, including medicines which you can get over the counter such as Tylenol and Motrin. However, you should be aware that while you are treating the fever, you are not treating the illness with these medicines.

If your baby is tugging at his ears or there is some liquid draining from his ears, then this is the best way your baby could tell you that he is suffering from an ear infection. Infants pull their ears to try to stop them from hurting. Sometimes, there is a think yellow substance which drains from the baby’s ears when he has an ear infection. Call the pediatrician and talk about these symptoms before diagnosing the illness on your own.

If you notice your baby falling more than usual while sitting up or crawling, then he could be suffering from an ear infection as it often causes a problem with an infant’s sense of hearing or balance. Even if no other symptoms of ear infection are present, you should call the baby’s pediatrician if you fear that your baby might be suffering from an ear infection.
