What Is Gynecomastia?

For the most part many have not heard about this unfortunate condition or affliction. It refers to male’s breast tissue enlargement. Men suffering from this condition or manifestation of hormonal imbalances mostly, have breasts that develop and look like the female posture and physique. Gynecomastia literally translated from the original, root or stem,  means “woman breast.” (G. gyne = woman, mastos = breast).

This increase in body tissue in the gender-sensitive area, surrounding the chest/breasts typically happens at times when the male individual in question suffers from hormonal fluctuations and changes. It can occur and onset during any and all stages of life and with differing levels of severity. It is prevalent and more common than most people thing. It happens just as easily during infancy, adolescence, and/or even old age.

The condition of abnormal enlargement of breasts in men, can be on one or both sides and is temporary. Hormonal imbalances are at the root-causality. Can also be due to the use of steroids, a side-effect or it can be totally a naturally occurring event that can be quite unsettling to the one that is suffering from Gynecomastia.

Hormone treatments and Gynecomastia can go hand in hand as well. Typically breasts are and can become very tender and sore. There might even be milk-discharge or secretions from the breasts.

Breasts or nipples and surrounding areas can be affected. This excessive development of the breasts in males can also be successfully treated with some antihypertensives drugs, excision or liposuction.

Teenage males can find this condition particularly difficult to deal with, combined with puberty, angst and all the peer-pressure and ridicule that accompany this type of condition. Especially with a physical anomaly or manifestation that is so out of the ordinary and deemed ‘abnormal’, weird and mostly made fun of.

The mammary glands in the breast develop too much and too fast, resulting in the enlarged breasts, similar to the female endowment. Mistakenly people think this is attributable to obesity, which it is not.  The good news is that it does shrink and eventually disappear with treatment. There is also surgical intervention to remove and eliminate male breasts, through breast-reduction, plastic-surgery type procedures. In the market there are also many remedies and cures touted and advocated that can help to lose the “man-boobs” quickly.
