Boston Terriers, Great Family Dogs

By , in Terrier Dogs.

Of all the terrier breeds, the Boston Terriers, affectionately called the Boston bull, are one of the most tough and well-muscled dogs. Yet their reputation is that of the ultimate family dog. One only has to see the great bonding that some of these pets have with the families that own them especially with the children to understand why this is so.

Boston Terriers are known to be very intelligent and loyal pets. More importantly they are very outgoing, affectionate and friendly, especially towards children. They love to be around people and join in all the family activities. If you have a big family and have young children, a Boston Terrier might be an ideal choice.

The Boston Terrier is usually very gentle and well-mannered. They are also very alert and very intelligent terriers that like to learn and please their owners. They are known to have a stubborn streak in them but done properly, it is a lot easier to train Boston Terriers than some of the other breeds. However, it is to be noted that they not only have to be exercised regularly but also provided enough mental and physical stimulus. Else they tend to become a little high-strung and destructive around the house.  Also they are fairly sensitive dogs that can pick up changes in your tone very quickly. As a result, you have to treat them in a very gentle and sensitive manner. On the other hand, their enthusiasm and affection can bring great joy to the children and to the whole family.

Boston Terriers can also be trained to become very good watchdogs. Though they are very friendly, they can be trained to bark when circumstance demands. They are exceptionally reliable with small children and very good with elderly people. They also get along well with other pets other than dogs.

Children also have to be taught to treat these dogs properly. Acting aggressively towards Boston Terriers may only get them riled up while teasing them or bothering them unnecessarily can disturb them. Teach children to take proper care of their dogs by feeding them and taking them out for a walk. At times, Boston terriers can get carried away with acts of affection or they can get hyperactive behaving like little hurricanes around the house. For most part however, these dogs are eager not to anger you and will obey you.

Very often, the Boston Terrier has also been called an American gentleman because of his smart appearance and traditional black coat, unusually gentle manner and great suitability as a family dog.  As can be seen, they are easy to train, easy to groom and require some moderate exercise. They are great as pets irrespective of whether you live in an apartment or in a large house with a backyard.

Considering all this, it is only natural that Boston Terriers are considered the ultimate family dog. In fact, by giving the most basic training and lots of love and affection, your Boston Terrier can be a valuable part of your family for years to come.
