Stun Guns Role In Self Protection

With incidences of street attacks making news every now and then, people are getting more and more conscious about self defense. Aligning with the same objective, several self defense products have been made available commercially. Amongst them, stun guns have truly made a mark owing to their sheer effectiveness.

Stun gun is a widely used defense tool that is based on electroshock technology. It should make a direct contact with the attacker in order to show its impact. It can deliver an electric shock of up to 800,000 volts. This high amount of charge though sounds good enough to kill a person, but the low amperage associated with this charge allows for some temporary damage only.

The technique actually being used in these stun guns is referred to as Electro-Muscular Disruption, or simply EMD. This includes inflicting temporary damage to the muscles leaving the attacker ineffective for some considerable amount of time.

Effects of these guns are quite instant as well as dramatic. A one-second shot from the stun gun is good enough to cause agonizing jerk to the attacker, alarming him that the defender is already armed. While a two-second exposure to a stun gun could cause some serious muscle spasm, a three-second shot could lead to a complete disorientation of the attacker, leading to complete loss of control over muscles.

Even though an attacker could entirely be incapacitated with over a three-second shot, it largely depends upon the distance of the attacker and the type of clothing he is wearing.

The functioning of a stun gun is based on the fact that human bodies are monitored by a large number of minute electrical charges. It comprises of a couple of small electrodes, which develop electric charge in between when the trigger of the gun is pulled. As soon as these electrodes get connected to human body, the space between the two electrodes gets filled and turns out to be a good conductor of electricity.

Electric charge so produced intervenes with the electric pulses of human body muscles, thereby causing severe spasms and contractions. These contractions and spasm in turn forces the attacker to use huge amounts of energy in smaller intervals of time, thereby leaving the entirely incapacitated.

While some of these stun guns are large in size and mostly designed to show force, most of the stun guns are small and can be concealed quite easily. Stun guns are also available in the form of cell phones, flashlights, or even umbrellas. All these models generally run on batteries and can deliver electric charge up to 200,000 to 800,000 volts. However, it is the amperage that actually defines the power of these stun guns. So check out the Wattage – a combination of both amperage and voltage, while purchasing a stun gun. A higher wattage simply indicates towards the higher power delivered by the equipment.

Stun guns are really very effective for self defense purposes. These guns have also turned out to be a great weapon for women to handle any dangerous attacks out on the streets.
