Many who suffer from psoriasis become very self conscious about the way that they look. Some develop unsightly skin lesions and feel ashamed to have them seen. Some stay inside and only go out if they are covered up. This sounds quite sad but in truth covering the lesions actually does them some good. As long as the coverings are clean, they keep them clear from dirt and other causes of infection. They also help to keep the skins moisture and medication in place and reduce the chances of the skin drying out.
Many of us remember the old weight loss wives tale of wrapping yourself up in clear plastic wrap in hopes that the fat would melt away. Where the results for weight loss were highly suspect, the effects for treating psoriasis are quite positive. You should first put your medication on your skin. Then place the plastic wrap around and leave it. This keeps the skin’s moisture in and helps work the medication in deep. You must be careful not to leave it on too long. Doing this can make the skin soggy which puts it at risk for secondary infections.
Doing this can improve the quality of your skin and help make those unsightly lesions caused by psoriasis go away. It can also reduce the itching and swelling causes by the disease.
When someone covers an area, we often associate it with feeling of sadness and shame. The feelings are heightened when we realize that many psoriasis sufferers do this because they are self conscious and embarrassed. However, covering these lesions need not be done out of shame but out of a sense of empowerment. Keeping them covered speeds the healing process and makes the person eventually feel better. By wrapping your wound in clear wrap, you are helping the medication to work best. You are also keeping the area moist which will reduce the itching.
Next time you have a flare up remember, reach for the plastic wrap and rub that medicine in. You may feel like a piece of left over but your skin will than you for it.
