As a parent, finding people that your child is friends with and learning all that you can about them isn’t just something you can do, it should be something you definitely do.  While you don’t have to go through all of the details, you should at least have an idea of who it is that your child just spent an hour on the phone with or the person that you are trusting to watch your child while you are away.  As a parent, you’ll feel safer about your child’s whereabouts and their contacts when you know a bit more about who is out there.

You can find people in a number of ways.  You can also find out more about them in a number of ways.  When you need to know who they are talking to or coming into contact with consider these tools as sources to help you to know more.

•    For any school related, sport related or otherwise educational person in your child’s life, a background check is one way to learn about them.  They should be done by the school or the organization, but if not consider doing one yourself.  You can do it right on the web and learn if there are any crimes or otherwise detrimental aspects on their report that you didn’t know about.
•    If you aren’t sure who keeps calling your child and are becoming suspicious when you answer the phone and no one is on the other line, consider using a reverse phone number lookup which can tell you who the phone is registered to.  That gives you more power to know who your child is talking to.

Who else comes into contact with your child that you may not know enough about?  There are probably many people, each of whom could be a bit of a risk. Learn what you can about their friends, their friend’s families (especially when they are spending time at their homes) as well as those that they talk to online or over the phone.  If you think that it can’t or won’t happen to you because it’s only something that happens to others, you may be wrong.  It only takes a few minutes to find people on the web, in one of these or other ways.  The ability to know that there’s nothing to worry about is something you should strive for.
