Technical Writing In Technology

Technical Writing In Technology
In many industries, you’ll find that businesses employ an entire internal technical writing department to produce important factual and necessary documentation to support their products and services.  However, the most common places to find such positions are in technology industries.  Why is this the case, and what is involved in becoming a technical writing expert in technology?

First of all, think of the complexity of most items in the field of technology.  Computers, Internet applications, software installation, telephone line installation, and more are all complex applications that require extensive explanations for most people, even some experts.  In order to make directions clear and concise, it is important that a business have a standard format for such documentation, as well as individuals who can follow the industry jargon and terminology that must be used to create the instructions intelligibly.  Technical writing departments work toward these goals, concentrating on maintaining standard formats for all types of documentation and making sure all individuals within the department are well-versed in the terminology of the particular area of technology in which they are employed.

Also, technology industries require specialized documentation that can be used internally.  This documentation is provided to the help desk support center, technical assistance department, and engineering department.  In these issues, there is a great amount of information that is not provided to the general public and is used to help frustrated callers troubleshoot their devices or to properly install software.  Technical writing departments try to format this material to be as user-friendly as possible as well, since many of these documents are hundreds and sometimes over a thousand pages long.  By formatting them more clearly, the technical writing department assures that the documents are as simple to search for technicians as possible so that they can quickly and easily locate the information they need to help the client with whom they are speaking.

Though they are rarely mentioned and tend to blend into the background, technical writing experts are often the backbone of companies in the technology industry.  Without the technical writing department, many manufacturers would flounder and fail in all sales due to a lack of support for products after the sale.  Customer service and product explanation is highly important to the success of a business, and the technical writing department provides this to the consumer.
