This is a sport that is not nearly as simple as many would lead you to believe. There is much strength, skill, coordination and perseverance required to be successful. In order to be able to kayak however, you need to know what to do and what you need to achieve success.
Equipment
Of course the first thing that you will need when going kayaking will be a kayak. You will need to decide on what type of kayak you will need based on the type of kayaking that you will be embarking on. You also need to look into the type of paddle that you will be using. All kayak paddles are of course two sided for the purpose of not needing to flip as you cruise through the water. You need to choose the material that they will be made of as well as the length of paddle that you will be using in your kayaking adventures. The last piece of equipment that you need to consider when kayaking is the life vest. Always important no matter how good of a swimmer you may be.
Instruction
It is not as simple as getting in the boat and just paddling your way to fun. There are techniques and skills that are involved in being able to kayak. Depending on the level that you wan tot achieve will depend on the amount of instruction that you will be receiving. If you just want to simply go out on a small pond or peaceful lake you will need minimal instruction to be successful. If you are looking to be able to do barrel rolls and shoot class VI rapids then you may want to invest in a certified instructor to provide guidance and hands on instruction in order to achieve success and insure your safety.
Where To Go
This is all dependent on what it is that you want to accomplish in your craft. If you are looking for adventure and risk, then you will want to go to a white water river. If you are just looking for a relaxing and peaceful day on the water, then you will want to find a large peaceful river or lake to simply paddle about in. Remember you can go as far or as short as you want with your boat it is up to you and the level that you want to take it to.
