WoW1 How it Began

When Blizzard Entertainment started with Warcraft: Orcs & Humans, it was a real-time strategy game. World of Warcraft, a recent incarnation of the game however is not that. But it is so many other things that the original version is not. For starter, it is immensely popular. World of Warcraft is a MMORPG (massively multi-player online role-playing game). If you think that it sound big, read on.

The players of Word of Warcraft choose an avatar, and control them throughout the game in all of game environment, and take them from level one to level 70. Players can battle against other players of enemy group in PvP (player versus player) battlegrounds. The winners are rewarded with money, time, skill, experience etc, which are very valuable commodity in the world of Azeroth. Players can also fight other players from the same group, but that would go unrewarded. Large portion of the game can be played without the help of other players, one can play them alone, whereas there are areas like dungeons where one has to play in collaboration with other players. The group of people joining force can be as big as 40, and one battle can take weeks or even months.

Players of Word of Warcraft are the characters in the game – the avatars in the Azeroth universe. There are ten races of these avatars and nine character classes. The races in their part are devided into two opposition fractions – the Alliance and the Horde. Humans, Night Elves, Dwarves, Gnomes and Draenei currently make up the Alliance, whereas Horde is made up of Orcs, Tauren, Undead (Forsaken), Trolls and Blood Elves. On top of that, there are NPC races including Goblins, Ogres, Murlocs, and Naga. And, Druit, Hunter, Mage, Paladin, Priest, Rogue, Shaman, Warlock and Warrior are the nince available classes.

The players can choose to develop the extra skills of their characters besides fighting. These skills are non-combatant and are known as – you guessed it – professions. These professions are in turn divided into primary skills – related to weapons gathering, creation and enhancement and secondary professions (skills that help to enhance player’s experience. Throughout the game of World of Warcraft, players can acquire several different items for their characters in the game. These items include herbs or raw ores or items to be retrieved for quests. They can also get weapons and armor.

In the geography of the game, the virtual world is built around two planets – planet of Azeroth and planet of Outland. Azeroth has two continents – Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor. Kalimdor is home to Orcs, Trolls, Blood Elves and Tauren, and also to the Alliance race. Outland was added recently to the game with the release of The Burning Crusade.

The game has ‘realms’ or server clusters, so that players can choose their own game-play preferences. These many server clusters, smartly named ‘realms’ are what make it possible for Blizzard to be able to accommodate so many subscribers at once. The four types of realm of the game are Normal (also called PvE or player versus environment, PvP (player versus player), RP (role-playing) and RP-PvP (role-playing PvP).
