Have you ever imagined an evening in your garden watching butterflies and humming birds flying all around and sucking the nectar of your flowers. There can be no other beautiful sight than this. However, to see this sight you need to ensure that humming birds and butterflies make their way to your garden.
All that might attract these humming birds and butterflies to your garden are your plants and the surroundings. They might not come if they fail to generate interest in your plants.
Humming birds and butterflies have tendencies to get attracted towards certain specific and peculiar types of vegetation and flora. As mentioned earlier, this is because they suck out the nectar from these plants.
Hence, in order to attract them to your beautiful garden, you should make sure that you plant some of these plants and flora which these birds like. Generally, these birds like a wide variety of flora and shrubs. Hence one can think of having some huge variety of plants and flowers in his garden.
Choosing Plants & Flowers:
Selection of flowers for your garden should be based upon the zone wherein you stay. It would also depend upon whether you are living in an area where there is abundance or scarcity of sun light and air.
Zone 2 to 8: This zone has the capability to grow The Red Columbine, a flower that attracts hummingbirds. Their red colored skin gives them a beautiful look and attracts birds rushing towards their home or destination. This flower also has the quality of blossoming in early season.
Zones 2 to 9: for those staying in these particular zones and wanting to have a tall garden in their backyard, they can plant ‘the Delphinium’. The Delphinium is a flowering plant which comes in different color schemes and grows up to 5 feet tall.
Other plants:
• Butterfly bush can be planted to attract dozens of butterflies. These bush plants can grow extremely tall. They can attract humming birds too
• Marigolds contain a lot of nectar which butterflies are too fond of. Additionally these come for cheap. So one can plant hundreds of such plants in garden
• Sunflower is another common flower attracting butterflies and birds through their nectar and seeds
Some flowers attract some specific type of butterflies and birds .For example, The Rabbit Brush and Canada Thistle are known for attracting the monarch butterflies.
Similarly, the Geraniums and Lilacs are known for attracting the Swallowtails. Daisies and the Gray Hairstreak plant, on the other hand, attract variety of butterflies.
Adding supply of water always helps to attract any type of birds. Hence this can also be done. Overall, a good healthy and colorful environment can do its best to attract birds and butterflies.
