Benefits of Adopting

By , in Adoption.

Whenever you see a happy family with their adopted child, you become aware of how much joy and what a sense of fulfillment the child has brought to that family. However, an adoption does not just benefit the adopting family, it benefits the child and it gives the birth parents comfort knowing their child is being taken care of.
The decision to give up one’s child for adoption is never an easy one and many birth parents go through a period of great indecision and conflict as they consider all the options before them and try and understand the challenges of raising their child on their own. Only after they realize that adoption can offer their child a better life do they make the hard decision of giving up their baby for adoption. Even then, they stay involved in many stages of the adoption process. They get to choose who the adopting parents will be and whether the adoption will be an open one or a closed one. They can choose to play an active role in their child’s life by selecting an open adoption or prefer to attain closure by selecting a closed one. A semi-open adoption helps birth parents maintain non-identifying contact with their child through a third-party; giving them the comfort of knowing that their child is doing well and at the same time reduces their feeling of guilt.

Most adopting parents are mature, financially stable and committed to devoting the time needed in providing their adopted child all the support that may be needed. Many even have children of their own and hence are more than aware of what children need to grow emotionally strong and secure. As a result, most adopted children grow up to be very well-adjusted. Many of them grow up with the advantage of having both their birth parents and adoptive parents in their life. This allows them to adjust to the new family better and helps them grow without any feeling of rejection in them. They tend to have better education opportunities and a real chance to make it in the world.

Adopting parents are of course the ones to realize the immediate benefits of having an additional member in their family. After months of waiting and spending thousands of dollars on legal fees, agency charges and so on, they are finally successful in getting the bundle of joy they had been after. Many can even get in touch with the prospective birth mother and enjoy the miracle of birth with her, beginning the bonding process with their child right from birth.

Adoption, can at times be a long-drawn and frustrating process but both the birth parents and the adopting parents have to keep in mind the end that they are trying to achieve which is providing the child the best support possible.  And once the adoption is successfully formalized, they can all move forward with their lives knowing that their child is receiving all the love and support it deserves.
