Bonsai is an amazing gardening art which involves shunting the growth of a typically large tree to get its miniature version. The meaning of word ‘bonsai’ itself is a small potted plant. The tree is given a specific shape to make it more attractive. You should have excellent skill and years of experience to grow bonsai tree. This art of creating and nurturing the bonsai plant originated in China. 

Growing a bonsai tree can be a part of recreation as well as a part of art. Generally, it is grown from the regular trees and plants. Outdoor bonsai trees are small-leafed, flower and fruit bearers. Japanese Black Pine, Five-needle Pine, Shimpaku Juniper, Japanese Maple, Grey-Bark Elm are some popular outdoor bonsai trees. Some well-known indoor bonsai plants are weeping fig, Parasol plant, Dwarf Holly, Hawaiian Schefflera and Jade plant. 

The bonsai tree can be grown in different classic designs such as formal upright (Chokkan), informal upright (Moyogi), slanting (Shakan), windswept (Fukinagashi) and cascade (Kengai). The Japanese Red Maple is the most recommended tree for the bonsai starters. Bonsai technique involves two methods such as pruning and wiring. Pruning is helpful for removing foliage, branches and roots to prevent the growth of the plant and keep the plant small. With the help of wiring method, you can give a particular shape to your bonsai plant.

It is important to take good care of bonsai tree; else it tends to dry out and die immediately. There are three key elements for proper care of the plant:

–    Water is critical for the bonsai plants to live. You should not over-water the tree and water it only when it is necessary. If the soil around the roots has become dry, then it’s the time to water your plant. If the soil is completely dry, then bonsai plant may be starving for water.
–    When your bonsai tree is in the growing phase, it is essential to apply the fertilizers in adequate amount which can enhance its growth. You should apply water-soluble fertilizers which allow the tree to grow correctly. The fertilizers should be applied once or twice in the month. Apply the fertilizers when the soil around the root is wet.
–    Before buying the fertilizers, ensure about the ingredients of the fertilizers. The fertilizers should contain adequate quantity of potassium, phosphorus and nitrogen which can enhance the growth of stem and leaves. In addition to these elements, the bonsai tree also needs iron and vitamins, especially vitamin B-complex.

You need to allow your bonsai plant to breathe. The bonsai tree requires sufficient fresh air and light to grow and live properly. Try to keep the bonsai plant away from direct sunlight as it can damage the tree. Placed the tree in the shaded area where it can get the benefits from the sun. Good ventilation and fresh air is crucial for the survival of your bonsai plant. Proper care of your bonsai tree can ensure that you have a healthy, attractive plants for several years to come.
