Colon Rectal Cancer Prognosis

If colon rectal cancer is detected at an early stage, there is a great chance that the patient might survive for a long time. Still, people whose cancer is detected at a later stage have no reason to lose hope. The only thing needed is proper treatment.

Stages of colon rectal cancer
Stage of the cancer is very important while going for treatment. If the cancer has reached a higher stage, the chance of surviving for five winters post-diagnosis is a mere 20%. But in case of early treatment, the survival chances go up to 90%. The bad the cell conditions are, the less are the survival chances. The stages of colon rectal cancer with chances to survive are mentioned below:

Stage 0
This is the initial stage. The cancer cells here are restricted to the lining of the rectum. A few cells may also be present in the initial lining of colon. A surgery is the best way to get the cancer treated from this stage.

The chance of survival where cancer is detected at this stage is the highest.

Stage 1
The cancerous cells penetrate into the colon much deeper in this stage, but they refrain from moving or metastasizing to other organs and tissues of the body.

Here the colon is the support for the cancer cells. A process called resection must be followed for treatment at this stage. This may be enough to protect the patient, and the chances of survival are pretty healthy here.

Stage 2
When the cancerous cells disturb other glands and tissues, Stage 2 comes into picture. Due to the irrational movement of the cancer cells, discomfort is generally experienced by people. Due to the fact that the cells have still not entered the lymph where these cells spread, there are still some chances of survival.

Besides surgery, based on the doctor’s observations, other modes of treatment can be prescribed as well. Chemotherapy and radiation are the most common treatment methods applied here.

Stage 3
The cells have already entered the lymph and this is an advanced stage. Surgery, radiation therapy as well as chemotherapy can be used simultaneously for treatment here. Compared to the first and second stages, the chances of foreseeing the cancer are much lower here.

Stage 4
Being the last stage, this is very impactful. The cancer cannot be totally removed even if all the methods of treatment are totally removed. The cells of cancer may have entered various parts of the body in this stage.

Though treatment is possible, but chances of survival stand at a slim rate of 20%. So this makes this a very crucial and a critical stage.

The stage of the cancer has a lot of bearing on the treatment of the disease. Due to its treatment in the earlier stages, prevention can be a good idea. Those above the age of 50 are highly open to colon rectal cancer, and should always take tests to confirm the presence of polyps in the body.
