If you do decide to reach for a certificate in technical writing, you have several options available to you.  Most schools offer three levels of certification in the field of technical writing.  One will take a novice and follow through an entire course setup that trains the individual as a technical writer from scratch, starting with the basics and building from there.  Another course of similar length is for those who are already working in the technical writing market and simply want the certification.  A more in-depth program actually acquires a Mastery Level certification for the Technical Communication Industry.
