Dealing with Your Newborn Baby’s Colic

Those of you who have taken care of a newborn before would agree with me that dealing with a colic baby is the most difficult thing that a parent has to face. If you are reading this article of newborn care, chances are that you would have already been given advice from many people on dealing with a colic baby and you might already have tried and tested many methods including rocking, swinging, singing, crying and every method written in the books of newborn care to keep the baby calm.

There are many beliefs about the causes of colic, some are:

* Breast feeding: in the field of newborn care, it is widely believed that breast feeding is the cause of a baby having colic. People argue that the reason that colic happens is either the baby not finding the milk suitable for him/her or simply the quantity of the milk fed during breast feeding is too much for a little tummy to handle.

* Bottled diet: It is also believed by some that the babies who are bottle fed are allergic to the formula. The reason behind this could be the sensitivity towards cow milk protein. For a colic baby trying switching to another formula made especially for colic babies which might help. The reason behind the sensitivity is because the baby’s digestive system is not fully developed.

* Getting used to: A good number of people who have done some sort of newborn care are also in opinion that the babies are not able to have a transition from one phase to another. Babies simply cannot go from “being inside womb” to “outside world” as efficiently as we go from United States of to United Kingdom! It takes a lot of time for a baby for getting used to and thus, the cockiness. We as parents can do many things to make this transition go smoothly. Some of the techniques are:

o Swaddling: It would help a baby if you swaddle him/her. The babies feel secure and safe when wrapped around; they feel a sense of similarity and thus get calm.
o Taking a Drive in a car or walking while carrying the baby while keeping the baby as close to the body as close as possible will calm the baby, as he doing this will imitate the motion that the baby feels when he/she is inside the a womb.
o Playing and making the baby, hear noises like those coming from a dishwasher, a vacuum cleaner, or a washing machine will create “white noises” which would also help the baby calm down, as the baby is used to hear these noises inside the womb.

* Transition: Another reason why babies are conic could be due to the fact that they are not able to have a transition from being awake to being asleep in many cases this phenomenon leads to formation of gas which aggravates the problem and is sometimes stated as the reason for babies being conic. While doing newborn care, using a technique called as Kangaroo care could help babies who are facing transition troubles. In kangaroo care baby is unclothed, possibly only in diapers, the baby is held as close to the body as possible, positioning the baby in between the chest so that baby’s head is placed just above the heart.

All or any of the above stated methods may help you in helping your conic baby. Just remember that this is just a phase and will pass with time.
