Decorating With Hammocks

If you’re redecorating your home, why not consider hammocks? They’re a unique addition to your indoor surroundings or for your deck or backyard, creating a relaxing, calming atmosphere and providing a unique resting place, indoors or out.

You are probably thinking of a hammock strictly as a horizontal platform, a swinging bed mounted from trees—not only horizontal but also outdoors. Certainly hammocks can be mounted between trees, but you will also find hammock swinging chairs, hammocks that hang from stands, and hammocks with ropes or cables at the corners connecting them to their stands, so they are more stable and sway less. There are almost an unlimited number of hammock types, because the hammock design is so versatile.

You can also find hammocks in a variety of materials. Rope hammocks are often made from cotton or nylon rope, but can also be made from hemp, jute or even twine. Many hammocks are also made from fabric, which means you can almost certainly find a hammock to match your decorating style.

You will need to think about where your hammock will go in your space, and how much room you have. Also, consider whether the hammock is for several people, such as a family, or for one person alone. Even if your hammock is primarily decorative, people will want to sit or lie on it, so make sure it’s suitable for the number of people you expect.

When you put a hammock in a room, you may think you then need a room design straight out of Gilligan’s Island, but you don’t have to go with tropical island or jungle décor. You can go with something a little different but still fitting in with the hammock, such as a nautical theme. Or you can completely go away from the hammock-related themes and decorate your room however you want, making the hammock fit your theme, rather than making your theme fit your hammock.

A hammock should be considered just another piece of furniture. Yes, it’s a slightly unique and swaying piece of furniture, but it is still just furniture, and you should work with your imagination and your sense of color and style to create a room around your hammock that fits your personality.

When you decide to use a hammock, or more than one hammock, as a centerpiece in your decorating scheme, you may find that you feel freer to go with some other unique ideas, than you would if you were working with traditional furniture. While it may at first seem a hammock limits what you can do, you’ll find this is not at all the case, and decorating with hammocks stimulates your imagination.

And remember that while decorating with hammocks is fun and gets your creative mind working, you’re also creating a usable, comfortable room. You’ll probably find yourself using a hammock more than you ever imagined, and you’ll be thrilled with your hammock decorating results. Hammocks are unusual enough to make decorating extremely exciting, while keeping it easy.
