Electrolysis FAQs

Electrolysis can be defined as the removal of hair by destroying the roots with the assistance of an electric charge. There are three kinds of electrolysis:
•    Galvanic
•    Thermolysis
•    Blend

Here’s a bit about each kind:
1) Galvanic Electrolysis
In galvanic electrolysis, the hair follicle is destroyed by lye. Lye is another name for sodium hydroxide that is formed owing to the passage of a DC current through the needle.

2) Thermolysis Electrolysis
The AC current results in the vibration of water partcicles that produce heat. The heat generated by this process results in the destruction of the hair follicle. This method, also known as “short-wave radio frequency diathermy” is faster than the galvanic process but not as reliable.

3) Blend Electrolysis
This is perhaps the quickest process because it allows the passage of both AC current and DC current. This method attempts to combine the benefits of both the processes mentioned above.

How does electrolysis work?
Extremely fine metal probes are put into the hair follicle and the time consuming factor is that each and every hair has to be destroyed individually.

How much does electrolysis cost?
The electrolysis charges are taken hourly. Keep in mind that the amount payable at the end of the process is dependent on both time and the rate. If someone offers lower rates and takes a lot of time, it is not much of a benefit.

The range is from $25 per hour and $100 per hour.

Is electrolysis painful?
The pain felt during the process depends upon individuals. Many have said that it does not hurt much but others have reported that they had to endure a lot of pain.

How long does electrolysis treatment take?
The time of the treatment is relative. It depends upon certain factors that vary from individual to individual. Things like the size of the region, the curvature of the hair follicle, skin sensitivity, hereditary tendencies and hormonal balance affect the treatment.

Fino Gior is a leading electrologist who has written a book called “Modern Electrology”. In his work he gives an average estimate of the time required for the treatment:

Upper Lip 4 to 10 hours
Chin 2 to12 hours
Sideburns 4 to8 hours
Eyebrows 3 to8 hours
Underarms 4 to12
Arms 5 to10 hours
Bikini Line 8 to16 hours

You must remember that the time varies according to many factors and these are just estimates recorded on the basis of the cases at clinics in the US and Canada.

Fino Gior is an expert electrologist who has been bestowed with the honor of the Charles E. Michel, M.D., Award, by the International Guild of Professional Electrologists. He has done a lot of research in this field and is well known the world over.

What is the effect of electrolysis on the skin?
The electrolysis treatment is safe when performed by a well-known electrologist. You must opt for a reputed electrologist and get the treatment done in an authorized clinic.

Ensure that the electrologist wears gloves and only uses disposable and sterilized needles. These simple precautions go a long way in preventing infections.

The immediate side effects of electrolysis are swelling, dryness and scabs.

The problem arises only when amateurs or unskilled professionals do the electrolysis. Then there is a definite risk of permanent damage to the skin.

How long do electrolysis results last?
The best thing about the electrolytic procedure is that it is a permanent method of hair removal and the roots are removed, so there is absolutely no chance of the hair growing back.

Sometimes, however, the hair does grow back after a span of two years or so. The clients generally come for a clean up in case this happens.

During the reproductive years, hair grows in the underarms, pubic region and around the nipples in women.

Before actually going for permanent hair removal through electrolysis, do a bit of a research and opt for an expert who is well known. The quality varies from country to country and even state to state sometimes.
