How Lap Band Surgery Works
Morbidly obese people now have the golden option of getting their weight reduced significantly by a hassle-free procedure without experiencing any kind of pain. This surgical procedure is known as Lapband surgery or Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding Procedure.
What it is
The Lap-band system is a simple, effective fast and advanced gastric banding system that aids you in long term weight loss by reducing the amount of food that the stomach will be able to hold at one time. This constantly evolving technology has received the approval of the US DA which proves that is one of the safest options available for weight loss. As the name suggests, it stems from the minimally invasive surgical procedure that is used here (laparoscopy) and the silicone elastomer band that is placed around the top of the upper part of the stomach. The chief way by which it works is by assisting you in controlling the food intake and in the event leading to sustainable long term weight loss.
Latest Developments
The LAP-BAND AP® System is the latest generation of the Lapband system. This system uses patented Omniform technology that minimizes the potential of leakages that may arise due to unwanted folds or creases.
Lap Band Surgery- System Procedure
This simple, yet advanced surgery is conducted in the following way:
1. The Lapband surgery places a band around the top of the upper part of the stomach via laparoscopic procedure. This band is made up of silicon, elastomer which is a prosthetic device.
2. The device contains an access port that is used to adjust the band a number of times by injecting saline water in it.
3. First of all, the lap band is placed by a laparoscopic procedure under general anesthesia.
4. Then, the surgeon cuts very small incisions in the abdominal wall and places “ports” within these incisions in order to make way for long, thin surgical instruments.
5. The surgery is conducted under the view of a narrow camera that is passed through one of the ports so that the surgeon can keep tack of the procedure on the monitor.
6. Then a small tunnel is built just behind the top of the stomach so that the Lapband device can pass through it. This also allows the band to be wrapped around the stomach just like a wristwatch.
7. After this, the Lapband is securely clasped in a ring round the upper stomach leading to the creation of an artificial, new and smaller stomach pouch. The stomach tissue is folded over the device and stitched together to help hold the system together.
8. In the entire procedure, only the upper part of the stomach is tampered with. The lower stomach remains in its normal position.
9. The small access port that was fitted for adjustment purpose is used to inject saline water into the Lapband whenever an adjustment is required.
10. The Lapband system is left bare for the first 4- weeks after the surgery is done.
Adjustment is a regular part during the follow-up of the Lapband surgery.
