Making Cheap Calls With Your Blackberry

There are not much in terms of options of availability of Voice over Internet Protocol or VOIP except for software solutions and standalone phones although everybody talks about it so much. Getting VOIP for your mobile, your PDA or your smart phone seems to take a long time on the mobile market.

Why is that? You may well ask. It comes down to economics for mobile phone companies and service providers. Mobile phone manufacturers work along with major carriers because they would rather you did not make cheap VOIP calls from your mobile handsets.

Their profit margins would see a drop if you could save so much money. But you need not worry. There are solutions out there that can give you the power of VOIP on your handset. You will have the ability to make web-activated calls via the internet and enjoy conversations between two or more normal handsets but the calls will be routed through the internet making it cheaper for all.

All you need is a phone – a normal phone, no special equipment needed here. Along with that you must have an internet connection and an internet browser.

What you basically need to do is fill in your number as well as that which you want to make a call to on a web interface and proceed to make the call. A computer will make the call to both phones and connect them enabling you to talk to the other number. The computer will first call you and then ask you to wait as it calls the other number you have provided. After that you proceed as you would in a normal phone call simply by talking to whoever is on the other line. You can even do this for free with some call service providers like Jajah.com by registering yourself with them.

Anybody with a Jajah.com account can call anybody else with an account and it’s all free. There is no limit to the distance though some remote countries and service providers are excluded from the program. For example if you are in the United States and want to call someone in China you need not pay exorbitant long-distance rates. You can actually call them for free!

For some time there was a problem for BlackBerry users. You needed a desktop with an internet browser to enter the phone numbers and make the calls which defeated the purpose of using a BlackBerry. But now, with a free program called ‘BBC Calls’ all you need is the data connection that most BlackBerry users have anyway.
