Hence, more and more people are getting interested to play volleyball.
This game is originated in United States of America. It was developed by William G. Morgan who was a YMCA physical education director. The Federation Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) was founded in the year 1947. If you wish to play volleyball, you must be familiar with its rules and scoring system. Volleyball is played on volleyball courts measuring 9 meters wide and 18 meters long which is divided into two 9 x 9 meter courts by a net of about one meter width. The net is placed at the height of about 2.43 meters above the ground for men’s competition, while at the height of about 2.24 meters for women’s competition. Each team comprises of six players, three positioned in front of the attack line and three behind. A team is selected to serve by coin toss.
Competitive teams should have six basic skills such as serve, set, pass, attack, dig and block to play volleyball. A player from the serving team stands behind the end line and throws the ball into the air and attempts to hit it so that it passes over the net. If the ball hits the ground in the court of opponent team, the server will be awarded the points. To avoid it, the opponent team should attempt to pass the ball using arms and hands. It is the hardest skill to develop in this game. The second contact made by the team with the ball is known as set, while third contact is known as attack. Block is the action that is taken by the players standing at the net in order to stop opponent’s attack. Digging means preventing the touching the court.
When the ball touches the floor within the court boundaries or a mistake is made by the opponent team, the team which did not make the fault is offered a point even if they have not served the ball. Three hits are allowed for each team to get the ball to other team over the net. Scoring of the points is done on the basis of how many times the ball hits the ground in the court of opponent team.
Passing the ball is one of the most important techniques in this game. Therefore, if you are willing to play volleyball, you will require daily practice to develop this technique. Whenever you get an opportunity of passing the ball, first you should set yourself into position that means receiving the ball between your knees and get in touch with it at closure height. After that, you should bow your knees, without bending at the waist. Bowing at the knees help you to keep your eyes up and you can easily observe what is going on.
