Save Money In A Recession

You may be completely aware of the importance of saving money for a rainy day. However, this may have never seemed so difficult as now when everyone is going through tough financial situations and the gap between income and expenses is nearly non-existent. And yet there is good news – with a bit of careful financial planning, you can manage to save money, even during recession.

  • Rework your budget – If you already have the habit of making a budget and sticking to it, you may just need to rework it a little to include your new figures of income. This way you will get to know by how much you need to cut down your expenses so that you can continue saving the same amount as before. To your surprise, you will find that the amount every month will not be a large one. Now, carefully go through your expenses – eliminate every unnecessary expense and reduce where you can.
  • Automatic Savings to Your Rescue – If you are having a tough time saving money toward the end of the month, set up an automatic savings feature with your bank. Through this feature, the bank will transfer a fixed amount every month from your checking account to your savings account. You will now have to manage your expenses within the available cash funds. This will make it easier for you to budget your expenses and will give you the satisfaction of knowing that you are certainly saving money every month.
  • Learn to Enjoy on a Budget – You may have heard of many families canceling their vacation abroad or of even eating out less for fear of spending more than what they can afford. While that is understandable, you can get a little creative and enjoy your vacations or have restaurant-like meals at home. Instead of taking your family for a vacation elsewhere, take them out every weekend to catch up with some local sights and those in cities nearby. Similarly, pick up a few simple recipe books or even invest in a cooking class so that you can make healthy, delicious meals right at home.
  • Coupons can be Helpful – You might feel a little weird clipping coupon from your paper and might think that this is very old-fashioned. However, you might be surprised at the kind of savings you end up getting on many of these coupons. Of course, you have to be careful that you do not get into the trap of buying something you did not need just so you could get the coupon.
  • Look at Your Tax Withholding Status – Every month, your employer may send you a paycheck after withholding some amount towards taxes. If while filing taxes, year after year, you notice that you typically receive a refund, you are having more money withheld than necessary. Claim all the exemptions you can and change your tax withholding status so that you get more out of your paycheck every month. As soon as you do that, have the extra amount automatically transferred to your savings account.
