Speech Therapy For Improved Confidence
Speech Therapy For Improved Confidence
If you’re often self-conscious and have a low self-image or opinion of yourself, there may be more to it than that. If you also have a speech impediment, even a mild one, you may be suffering unnecessary embarrassment because of your difficulty speaking. Speech therapy can help you become much more confident.
Speech impediments and low self-confidence are very often linked. People notice how we speak, and we judge ourselves harshly for our speech impediment because we think other people are judging us because of it. This is almost never true, of course, but that doesn’t matter. What matters is that you feel uncomfortable because of your speech, and there is a way to overcome that discomfort by treating your speech.
When you live with a speech impediment, you have trouble communicating, or feeling that you’re being heard and understood. You may feel, in fact, very frustrated and even trapped in your head because you cannot easily get your ideas across. You may not be able to perform as well at work as you would like, and you may have trouble speaking in public or in front of people you do not know well. Socially, as well as professionally, a speech impediment can be a real handicap, if it makes you feel you’re not able to communicate well.
If you have a speech impediment, whether you stammer or lisp, getting some therapy can literally change your life. You may not understand how much your speech is affecting your everyday activities, until you no longer have to think or worry about it.
Of course, if your speech impediment does not bother you, that’s great; you do not have to feel bad about anything. But if you do have a problem with your self-image because of your speech, seeking some therapy can be very helpful.
You might want to start with home study DVDs or books that teach you some self-help techniques for dealing with your speech. If you still feel you need help, you may want to go to a speech therapist or get one-on-one speech coaching from someone who works with people who have a problem speaking fluently in front of others.
Speech therapy can help you find the physical causes of your speech impediment and train your muscles to speak differently. Working with a speech therapist, or with a therapist who specializes in your specific problem, such as a lisp or stutter, can help you overcome the speech impediment that has been holding you back.
It is easy for others to say that you should not feel bad about your speech, and that it doesn’t matter. If you’re living with a speaking disorder that embarrasses you, makes you feel self-conscious, and limits your life in any way, then it does matter, and you do have the right to seek help and improve your speech. It doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks, but if it is a disturbing factor in your life, it’s a problem and you need to overcome it.
