Test Taking: The Basics
Test Taking: The Basics
Test taking is a fundamental part of student life. There is just no escaping it no matter what. Midterms and finals, every semester, twice a year. And then the teachers will probably sneak in a few surprise quizzes here and there. But it is often is not what people make it to be. There are some basic things you have to keep in mind when you are getting ready for a test taking.
Understand the subject properly. This is the most essential part of preparing for a test. If you know the subject matter well then you can write about it in any form that you want. And you don’t have to memorize the lines from the book. In fact, memorizing answers is usually not a good idea because the test taking process is to see how much you have understood the subject and where you stand, so if you just memorize everything it can be counter productive. And tests aren’t really competitions with other people but more a mechanism to check the status of the test giver alone.
Do not plagiarize under any circumstances. There is always a chance that a student might get tempted to plagiarize answers during the tests, but that is a very bad idea indeed. First of all, what is the point of taking a test if you are just going to plagiarize? The grade you get in the end will be baseless and say nothing about you. And second, it’s just wrong. But the third reason is the one you must keep in mind; most teachers will void your entire test and fail you if you are caught plagiarizing during your test taking. Students who consider plagiarizing always think they won’t get caught but teachers are no fools either, they have been doing their job a lot longer. And not only are they good at spotting cheaters in classrooms while giving the test, but they are also usually pretty good at catching plagiarized materials in take home exams such as essay writing.
And again, if you know your subject matter well then there is really no reason for you to plagiarize. You will be easily able to write the answers in your own words. There are several ways to prepare for a test taking but the simplest way is to just pay attention in class and ask questions if you are confused about anything. It is natural that sometimes students might feel awkward to ask questions in front of their friends in the class, but you shouldn’t worry about things like that. However, if you really don’t want to ask in public, then teachers are always more than happy to help you out later after class. Just get an appointment. Revising the work occasionally and casually every now and then helps a great deal too. Just make sure that during your revisions you are in a comfortable setting and not distracted. This way, you don’t have to cover a lot of ground just before your exam or something. It’s always better to wake up fresh for a test taking.
