Things To Be Avoided With Pregnancy
As an expectant mother, you may be aware of a hundred different things that you can do to improve your and your baby’s health. However, what about the things that you should not do during your pregnancy? For example, did you know that you should avoid long, hot baths, especially in the first trimester of your pregnancy? Here is a list of some of the things that you should avoid during pregnancy.
· Smoking: Smoking is extremely dangerous to the health of both the mother and unborn baby. In fact, even second-hand smoke is believed to be harmful and can result in the baby being born with birth defects or with very low birth weight. It is therefore imperative that you quit smoking even as you are planning for your pregnancy.
· Alcohol: It was earlier believed that limited alcohol consumption during pregnancy was safe. However, it has now been acknowledged that consuming alcohol even in limited amounts can directly affect the fetus and thus should be completely avoided during pregnancy.
· Caffeine: Consumption of tea, coffee or soda with caffeine content is again believed to be safe within limits. However, it is known that caffeine does have some impact on the growing fetus and it is better that all consumption of caffeinated products be avoided during pregnancy.
· Junk Food: It is very important that you stick to a healthy, nutritious diet during your pregnancy. This minimizes the risk of you developing any complications during pregnancy and also helps you in achieving a healthy weight gain. Eating junk food does not give you the nutrients you require and only increases the chance of you gaining more weight than recommended. If you feel the craving to eat any junk food, see if you can try a healthy alternative that comes close to it. For example, a low-fat yogurt is a good healthy alternative when you have a craving for ice-cream.
· X-Rays: X-rays are considered harmful to the fetus especially during the first three months. Avoid going in for x-rays when you are pregnant. If it becomes absolutely necessary, inform the doctor or nurse beforehand that you are pregnant so that extra precautions can be taken to minimize the effect of x-rays on your baby.
· Increasing Body Temperature: Increasing body temperature can result in potential danger to the growing baby and this can be caused by strenuous exercising, having a long bath in hot water, being in hot water saunas or working outdoors in hot summer days. Avoid situations that can cause a steep rise in body temperature.
· Toxic Products: Many paints, paint thinners and some household cleaners contain toxic products, inhaling which can cause harm to the fetus. Be educated on what different cleaners contain before you use them.
· Stress: Pregnancy is a time of some stress and anxiety for the parents to be. However, heightened stress can result in an increased risk of complications. It is important that you think of different ways in which you can relieve yourself of stress, like indulging in a hobby or talking to close friends and family members.
