Training Tips For Yorkshire Terriers
The Yorkshire may be small in size but is big in personality and manages to win over many hearts with its charm and vivacity. Since they are so small and yet possess the typical energetic nature of a terrier, training them takes some special skills and exceptional patience.
- · The small size of your Yorkshire terrier may make you feel that it does not need obedience training the same way other dogs do. However, this is a mistaken notion. While there may be some difference in the methods used to train smaller terriers, they will have to be taught to respond to basic commands like come, stay, sit and heel.
- · Yorkshires can be sensitive to sounds. As much as possible ensure that there are no loud noises or other disturbances in the house. Dogs generally have a more acute sense of hearing than we do and while some dogs manage to handle fairly loud noises and commotions, some get very upset.
- · Yorkshire terriers are notorious for picking at their food instead of finishing it all up in one go. They tend to eat a little, roam around and then come back to eat a little more. If you think that your dog is done and remove the dish, your pet may go hungry without realizing it. And if this goes on for a few days, there are serious chances that your pet will become malnourished. Learn to leave the dish for sometime and keep coaxing your terrier to eat what is in it. You may also want to add some warm water from time to time to keep it moist and tasty.
- · Yorkshire terriers are tremendously vivacious and develop very strong bonds of friendships, especially with their owners. If you are going to be away from home for a very long time, chances are your terrier will feel very miserable. It is good to have someone who cares about dogs as much as you do, take care of your terrier for the few days that you are away.
- · Yorkshires are easy to train but they do tend to forget easily. Get to know what treats make your pet really happy and then keep training and rewarding it till your terrier remembers the command and responds to it.
- · Your Yorkshire terrier may be just a puppy when you brought it home and you may even have to train it to alert you when it needs to go out of the house. The best thing would be to train it to alert you by going to the door and barking.
- · When you go for walks with your Yorkshire, keep a handful of treats with you. Train it repeatedly regarding where it should go while outside the house. For every command properly followed, reward your terrier with a treat. Speak to your pet in a loving tone and follow up with a pat or words of encouragement. Very soon, your Yorkshire will start responding to every command of yours.
