Volleyball is full of passion and energy and a part of the great Olympic Games. In this game, two teams of six active players are separated by a high net. Volleyball is a very active sport and it is an excellent form of aerobic exercise. The origin of this game can be found in United States of America. The dimension of the volleyball court is 9 meters in width and 18 meters in length which is divided into two 9 x 9 meter courts by a high net of about one meter width. The net is placed at the height of about 2.43 meters above the ground in case of men’s competition, while at the height of about 2.24 meters for women’s competition. Each participating team comprises of six players. Out of them, three players are positioned in front of the attack line and three behind. A team is selected to serve by coin toss.
Basic volleyball rules revolve around the serve, scoring, rotation and playing the game. A player from the serving team should stand behind the end line and throws the ball into the air and should attempt to hit it so that it passes over the net. The ball is served underhand or overhand. Ball should be clearly seen by the opponent team before initializing service. Served ball may cross the net. If the ball hits the ground in the court of opponent team, the server will be awarded the points. To avoid it, the opponent team should attempt to pass the ball using arms and hands. First serve is done by a volley, but every subsequent game is to be served by the previous game loser. The serve should be returned by a bump and not by attacking or setting a serve.
There are certain volleyball rules regarding the scoring. In this game, rally scoring is applied. A point is scored on every score of the ball. When the ball touches the floor within the court boundaries or a mistake is made by the opponent team, the team which did not make the fault is offered a point even if they have not served the ball. Scoring of the points is done on the basis of how many times the ball hits the ground in the court of opponent team. The game is played to 25 points. Any team should win the game by 2 points.
The team will rotate every time as they win the serve. The players rotate in the clockwise manner. There should be 4-6 players on each side. Three hits are allowed for each team to get the ball to other team over the net. The player should not hit the ball twice in sequence. The ball should be played off the net on serve and during a volley. If two or more players contact the ball at the same time, it is considered as one play and the players involved are not allowed to participate in the next play.
