Why Choose German Shepherds?
If you’re planning on bringing a new dog into your family, either through purchasing a full-breed puppy or adopting a puppy or dog from a rescue, a German Shepherd might be exactly what you’re looking for. Shepherds are smart, active, well-tempered, enthusiastic, great-looking and generally very good with children and pets. They’re also easily trained and very loyal and obedient. Sound good so far?
If you’re looking for a great companion dog, and interested in a large dog, German Shepherds are one of your best choices. They weight about 80 pounds, generally, and are comfortable in or outdoors. They like being indoors because they’re very loyal and loving, but a German Shepherd can live comfortably in a fenced yard, as long as there are toys and opportunities to play and run.
Shepherds are v very good companion dogs, because they’re very even-tempered and gentle. While they can be trained as guard dogs, they’re not vicious by nature, and they’re very obedient and easy to train. Shepherds are eager to please, so once they know what you want from them, they’ll do everything they can to please you. They’re very loving and devoted, and are good with kids and other animals.
One thing to consider when you’re looking for a dog is how much time you can give to playing, training and being with the dog. German Shepherds are working dogs, and like to have something to do. If you have time to spend playing, or if you can give your pup something to do, like bringing his food bowl at dinner or keeping squirrels out of the yard, he’ll be happy and healthy. Shepherds can get bored, so it’s important that they have outlets for their energy, but as long as they do, they’re very happy to do whatever is asked of them.
If you live in an apartment, but you can have a larger dog, German Shepherds are a great choice, because they are good at being quiet and inactive indoors. They’re actually better at this than many small dogs, which tend to yap and run around a lot. Your Shepherd will need regular walks, of course, but they make great indoor dogs and are great for older people who live alone, as long as someone can walk the dog regularly for them.
Overall, if you’re looking for a dog that is good with both kids and adults, will be quiet and still indoors, is extremely intelligent, is easily trained, wants to please, and loves people, you’re looking for a German Shepherd. These dogs, which we normally think of as police dogs, service dogs and military dogs, actually make incredibly good pets.
Like many other working breeds, German Shepherds are very good with people and are good at learning what’s expected of them and doing that. These are important traits in a companion animal, particularly one who will live indoors or in an urban areas, where behaviors like incessant barking or nipping can be a problem in a dog. Your German Shepherd will learn what is right, and strive to do it; this is one of the biggest advantages of Shepherds.
