Develop Empowering Habits
Before we start to discuss empowerment habits, we need to understand one of the most opposing forces of empowerment – procrastination. While many of us are guilty of procrastination at some point or another, we fall completely prey to this habit till we find that it is impossible to get out of it. Slowly, you are stopped from doing things that you love and as the demand on our time keeps increasing, we feel more and more reluctant to tackle this problem.
Procrastination sets in those people who are in a hurry to get somewhere. Instead of calmly working out what needs to be done to achieve one’s goals, these people tend to start feeling overwhelmed by the kind of things that one has to do before achieving even one small goal. This leads to a defeatist attitude and you start postponing things that you should be taking care of on a regular basis.
When there is this feeling that life is out of control and that one has no power to control it, direct it or shape it, then one starts avoiding or delaying doing things. While we come across many events over which we have no real control, there is one thing that we fully control and that is our reaction to whatever that is happening around us. Instead of feeling sad and dejected, we should recognize this power and do away with our procrastinating habits. Here are some ways in which we can develop empowering habits.
* We have to recognize that we have control over this habit. Though we may believe that outside events have caused us to behave this way, the truth is we are in control of the way we feel and react. Procrastination is just a response and like all other responses, we should just learn to change our response.
* Procrastination can really bring a person down and there is this overwhelming feeling that one cannot do anything about it. Again, this is a matter of belief, and you should start believing that you can take steps to get rid of this procrastination habit.
* One may also procrastinate doing something because of fear. Fear of not knowing what will happen if you do deal with something right away. However, fear can be very crippling. Remember the thing that you are afraid of has not yet happened. You cannot live your life afraid of something that may never happen. Confront your fear and stop procrastinating.
* Practice makes perfect they say and so it is about developing any habit. Keep doing something over and over again till you find that you are doing it naturally enough. Condition yourself to respond to situations more positively and keep doing so again and again. Very soon, you will be successfully handling difficult situations without even realizing it.
Procrastination takes away our ability to react immediately to any situation and to take positive steps. We have to remember that we are ultimately in charge of any situation and the way we respond to it – so act now and stay empowered.
