Tips For Work At Moms With Teenage Children
Parents working at home have to face new challenges everyday. If it is not something at home, there will be a problem at work. Most of the time, they manage but when it comes to caring for their kids, working parents often feel very guilty and frustrated. And if their children are in the tough teenage years, then parenting can be a real challenge indeed. Here are some quick tips for work-at-home moms with teenage children.
- You should always lay down a very clear set of boundaries to your children, both young and old. These will not only help you handle things more efficiently but also there will be no confusion about what is acceptable behavior and what is not. You should request all your children to behave with you and with each other with some basic respect. Next, you have to come up with a schedule of your working hours so that your teenager will know when not to interrupt you unless there is a real emergency. Of course, you cannot just lock yourself up in your office and will need to take an occasional break to monitor what your children are doing. Teenagers especially have to be reminded to do their homework and you have to make sure that they are not using your absence to make long calls on their mobile.
- While you may feel that your teenager does not need you any longer, you should remember that they are still children and are still developing, not just physically, but mentally and emotionally as well. In fact, all these changes may be putting your teen through some tough times and you may need to pay more attention towards them than before. Very often neglected teenagers start becoming depressed and suffer from low self-esteem problems. Spend more time with your teens for a few days to let them know that you are there for them.
- Do not keep them cooped up. Young teenagers are still dependent on you for a lot of things – transportation, pocket money and so on. If they are to stay at home with nothing to do, they might feel as though they are being punished. Make sure you allow them some time with their video games or television. Also encourage them to read books, try some crafts or go out and play some sports. If your or your husband owns a business, which needs good helpers, your teenager could occasionally help you both out.
- Be flexible and adjust as time goes by. Though you would ideally like to work in your scheduled working hours, work-at-home-moms know that adjustments have to be made to allow for urgent situations. If your teen needs you, leave your work for the moment and give them the time they need. You can probably make up for the time lost by taking time out from somewhere else but be there when your teen needs you. Remember, being a work-at-home mom means that you are a mom, first and foremost, who chooses to work from home.
