Using A Family Schedule
If you are working from home, then you will be aware of how difficult it is to manage your work and family commitments as also take care of kids. One of the most important tools that come in handy while working from home is the creation of a daily schedule. Though you may feel that a daily schedule is more for your benefit than that of your kids, you may be surprised to know that a structured environment is very important to a child’s overall development.
You have to understand that as your children grow up, they are no longer as attached to you. This does not mean that they do not need you, it just means that instead of following what you said because of their attachment to you, children will now want a sense of shared goals and of shared communications. A daily schedule will make your children feel grown up and make them feel that they are contributing to whatever the family is trying to achieve. Every time the child follows the schedule, you can be sure that he or she feels a sense of achievement
Here is how you can use a family schedule to manage both your work and kids.
1. To begin with, analyze how your family spends time at home every day. Note what every family member is doing at different times during the day. See if you can combine a few tasks or adjust some schedule so that there no longer problems associated with stress, hunger, fatigue, or simply because of disorganization.
2. Focus on what you want and what you had aimed to achieve by working from home. Ensure that those ends are being met. For example, make sure that there is less confusion in the morning when children are headed to school, all homework should be done by dinner time and children should be in bed by a particular time. You should also allot time for family playing time, for getting the house clean and for relaxation. There should be a balance between what the parents’ need and what children need.
3. Once you have a schedule ready, you can just write it down on a big poster board and put it in place where everyone can see it. Inform them that this is the schedule to be followed from now on. Of course, there will be protests from some corners since it is difficult to please everyone. However, you need to stand firm and stick to the schedule you have planned.
4. It is very important that you review how your schedule is working for every one and then revising it if necessary. Ask your children to check if everything is working according to your schedule. Leave what is working alone and concentrate on what is not working. Make some changes that you think will work and include that in your schedule. Slowly, everything in your house will happen according to schedule and you will find how happier and peaceful your family life is.
