Coaching Volleyball
Coaching Volleyball
Being a coach is a demanding job any day, be it cricket or volleyball. Expectations are higher from the people as well as the players. Players see you as the savior. So, ultimately it gets tougher for coaches to deliver what is expected.
Players carry themselves well in the beginning of a season, but as the time progresses, the job of coach gets tougher. He has to keep the team going. Practices should be made a fun and not an ineffective habitual.
Players generally are exhausted and unfocused as the season nears its end. Thus, something needs to be done by the coach to keep them going. Here are few tips for volleyball coaching that can make a difference with practices as fun filled learning experience.
The warm-ups, engage yourself
The initial step of the day’s work for players is the warm up. If that starts on a low note, it is not a good sign, which invariably is the case. Even though warm-ups are a routine, they can still be dealt with, a bit more artistically. There can even be simple games instead of just getting up and running laps or getting yourself stretched. Dodge ball and freeze-tag can be such options.
1. You are tagged. Freeze it.
This is a simple game, where a person takes responsibility of tagging all the others. Once that person touches the others, they are tagged. It means that they need to freeze and stand spreading their legs broad. To unfreeze, some player has to dive between the legs of frozen player. The game goes on this way until all are tagged. This is really a good exercise as it trains the player with running and diving exercise.
2. Dodge This
This is another interesting game that gets the players pumped up. The team is divided into group of two. They stand opposite to each other given a definite playing area. Each team has the task of hitting members of the opponent team.
The trivia here is that once a player gets hit or his throw is being caught by the opponent, he is sent to jail, which is the area behind the opponent team’s zone. Also, he can free himself by grabbing the ball and striking the player of opposite team. This game increases your reflexes and helps sharpening your all round skills.
Ideas for the future
Goals should be set by the players as well as by the coach about how the team should perform. And to achieve that goal, the coach taking the players along with him should do proper planning. Each player should go on initially by penning down 3 issues that he thinks should be done for the betterment of play. In this way, he feels involved and there are more ideas to shape the play. Thus finally a team goal can be decided and can be worked upon accordingly.
Above discussed were just a few of the issues that can actually make a difference to the team’s performance and thus leading them to victory. It actually helps!
